Ryan Gosling Exits LOGAN’S RUN

Variety reports that Ryan Gosling (Drive, Gangster Squad) has exited Nicolas Winding Refn’s Logan’s Run remake. A reason hasn’t been given but it’s possible Ryan’s directorial debut could be causing problems with the film’s production. Nicolas is still attached but it’s looking like he’ll have to find another leading man for the project.

Nicolas Winding Refn Could Direct Hitman Thriller ‘BUTTON MAN’

Deadline has word that Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn is currently in talks with Dreamworks to direct their thriller Button Man: The Killing Game which is based on a graphic novel. The project has a script from screenwriter Hilary Seitz who wrote Christopher Nolan’s serial killer thriller Insomnia. Giving the impression it could be ready to go into production this year. Nicolas just wrapped production on his next film Only God Forgives and seemingly won’t be making Logan’s Run anytime soon since plans for that production start haven’t been made.

The action revolves around Harry Exton, a hired gun who’s offered a fortune to take part in a game organized by bored millionaires that sets trained killers against one another in a fight to the death. The fat cats bet on the proceedings, and when Exton gets disgusted and opts out, his only exit strategy might be to off the millionaires funding the competition.

ProductionWeekly had reported a rumor that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks for Harry Exton. EW would later debunk the rumor and DiCaprio is not even involved. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Ryan Gosling or Mads Mikkelsen step up to the plate here. Then again DiCaprio has been attracted to projects mainly because of the directors involved, so you never know if he’d turn down an offer if Nicolas was directing it.

Nicolas Winding Refn Wants To Make ‘I Walk With The Dead’ With Carey Mulligan Next

Dutch writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Drive) talked to ThePlaylist about his upcoming film Only God Forgives which is currently shooting with Ryan Gosling in the lead. He reveals that he’s aiming to make his sex thriller/horror film I Walk With The Dead next which has Drive actress Carey Mulligan (Shame) attached. Not much is known about the film besides it might be set in LA and Tokyo with a large amount of sex scenes.
The horror elements are unknown as well at this point but I have to assume vampires might be the focus. When I think of Nicolas making a horror film it makes me think of Tony Scott’s vampire sex thriller The Hunger. Either way it looks like the Logan’s Run remake will be further delayed with this news.

Daniel Espinosa Could Direct Yakuza Film The Outsider, Fassbender Might Star

Variety is reporting some rather large updates on the development of Warner Bros’ The Outsider. The WWII era action film takes place in Japan with the backdrop of the notorious Yakuza. They say the studio is in early talks with Swedish director Daniel Espinosa to helm the period action film. It movie focuses on a WWII POW, who is broken out by the Yakuza and forces him to work for the criminal syndicate. Andrew Baldwin will write the script and is also working with WB and director Nicolas Winding Refn on their remake of Logan’s Run.

Espinosa burst onto the screen when his Swedish crime thriller Snabba Cash quickly became one of the coolest films of 2011. Cash is now heading towards a trilogy with the second film starring Joel Kinnaman expected to release sometime this year. He would eventually land his first Hollywood gig Safe House directing Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in the CIA thriller that ended up with #1 spot.

Another interesting aspect is that the studio is looking at Michael Fassbender for the lead role. Previously it was reported Leonardo DiCaprio was being eyed for the role but it looks like Warners is hedging their bets with other options. Fassbender has already lined up roles for the spring/summer with Ridley Scott’s The Counselor going first than a supporting role in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. The Outsider would be excellent film for Michael as he can fire on sides here. I feel like this could be the next Eastern Promises mets Departed if done properly. Also, the move to hire a cast mostly made up of Japanese actors is the best way to go here. The studio distributed the hard boiled Yakuza film Outrage domestically and it would awesome to see those actors in Outsider as well.

Warner Bros. Adds Another Writer To Logan’s Run

HeatVision reports that Warner Bros. has hired yet another writer to tinker with the Logan’s Run script. Andrew Baldwin has been set to give his contribution previously writers Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and Will Beall (Gangster Squad) had worked on it. Baldwin recently sold the Yakuza film The Outsider to the studio and wrote Red Asphalt for Timur Bekmembatov (Wanted, Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter).

The film starring Ryan Gosling has also gone through a few different directors. It first started out with Bryan Singer (X-Men) then went to James McTiegue (V For Vendetta) later to Carl Erik Rinsch (47 Ronin) and finally to Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson, Pusher).

Johnny Jewel Reteaming With Nicolas Winding Refn For Logan’s Run

Johnny Jewel isn’t a household name yet but he’s responsible for some interesting indie electro groups such as the Glass Candy, Chromatics and Desire. The latter provived tracks for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive soundtrack. The Chromatics song Tick of The Clock being used for the film’s trailers.

Movies.Com (via CinemaBlend) caught up with Jewel in which he revealed he is in talks with the writer/director to score his remake of Logan’s Run which has Ryan Gosling attached as the lead. It’s expected that after Only God Forgives is finished he’ll start working on Logan’s Run. Jewel made his own score for Drive that didn’t get used instead Cliff Martinez’s score was chosen. It’s very well possible that the unused music was enough to convince Nicolas. Personally, I love Jewel’s music and his score could be on the level of Daft Punk’s Tron Legacy or Trent Reznor’s haunting scores for Social Network and Dragon Tattoo.

“Nick talked to me a little bit about Logan’s Run…He mentioned it and was just trying to feel out if I was interested, and I was telling him about how on my 30th birthday, I had a party and I had a blinking stone in my hand, because I was super into that movie and obsessed with the idea of turning 30 or whatever.”

Will Beall In Talks To Rework Logan’s Run Script

HeatVision reports Warner Bros. is talks with new screenwriter Will Beall to rework Alex Garland’s Logan’s Run script. Beall wrote Gangster Squad for the studio which is quickly becoming a very large project. Currently Nicolas Winding Refn is set to direct with Ryan Gosling in lead.

Nicolas Winding Refn To Direct Logan’s Run, Ryan Gosling Closing Deal To Star

It looks like Warner Bros. has finally got their Logan’s Run remake close to production. Deadline reports that Nicolas Winding Refn (Pusher Trilogy, Bronson) is set to direct with Ryan Gosling finalizing his deal to play Logan. Gosling recently worked with Nicolas on the action thriller Drive and seems to be the key reason he’s finally making an event studio film. I’m also excited to see Winding Refn jump into the sci-fi genre.

Bryan Singer had once been attached to direct but left to focus on other films. Carl Rinsch (The Gift, 47 Ronin) was next but also ditched the project to shoot his samurai film 47 Ronin. Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, Dredd) has written a well received script for the studio and it’s expected it could go into production sometime this year.

Alex Garland In Talks To Write Logan’s Run

HeatVision reports that Warner Bros. has hired Alex Garland to write the screenplay for the reboot of Logan’s Run. It’s been in development for years now with it’s current director Carl Rinsch in place. Garland is on a tear lately with his screenplays, he’s responsible for The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Never Let Me Go. He’s also worked on scripts for the Judge Dredd reboot and the Halo movie.

“In a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a “runner” and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.”

Carl Rinsch To Direct Logan’s Run Remake?

The Logan’s Run remake has been in development for a while now. Bryan Singer, James McTeigue (V For Vendetta) and Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) were all once attached to direct. HeatVision reports that Warner Bros. is in talks with Carl Rinsch to direct the sci-fi action thriller. Rinsch is also set to direct Kenu Reeves in 47 Ronin and was once attached to the Alien prequel. He was on Fox’s wishlist of directors to take on X-Men First Class. Carl’s short film The Gift got some major buzz and helped fuel a bidding war to turn it into feature film. I’m excited to see Rinsch tackle a full length feature even more so one that’s set in the sci-fi world.
